A month seems like a long time, but believe me when I say time flies when you are in paradise. We will split our time between Kahama in the mainland and the Island of Zanzibar off of the Indian Ocean in Eastern Africa
One of the greatest rewards of traveling is learning how the locals experience day to day life. During our time on the island of Zanzibar we will be working with two groups and learn what it is like to truly immerse in the Tanzanian culture.
1 week volunteering at the orphanage catered to kids with HIV, 1 week at the seaweed farm, 1-2weeks building a makuti roof for a local family or a . basketball court (done in August).
Cost: $4999
Replace a week of volunteering for the Zanzibar excursion package: $1100
Add one month in Kahama $7999 total.
This trip is offered late June and July.
Furahia Wanawake Seaweed Farm
Importing goods to Zanzibar is quite expensive, so the locals make the most of the natural resources they have. Furahia Wanawake is an all women owned company (very rare in Tanzania). They cultivate, harvest and make products out of seaweed. Students will have the opportunity to learn the processes they use to make soaps and oils and may even be able to take a goodie bag home (this opportunity may not be available to everyone as their capacity is limited).
HIV Orphanage
A free after-school program for kids as well as a place for 22 dancers and acrobats call home. During our time at Move, students get to volunteer with kids in the classrooms as well as participate in dance performances for the community on Saturday's. There is no better way to immerse in a culture than to work with Move Zanzibar everyday in their endeavors to make a positive impact in their community.
Makuti Roof
Many homes in the village of Jambiani have pieced together scrap materials to provide roofing for their homes. We will spend a week putting together as many makuti roofing materials to roof as many homes as possible.
Island Excursion Add-on:
Students will choose between Scuba or Kite Surfing lessons. We will all take a trip to the beautiful blue lagoon and snorkel the starfish island and witness the colorful reefs in Zanzibar. A day at the turtle sanctuary is also a highlight of the trip. Zanzibar wouldn't be complete without a visit to Stone Town.
Imagine a community that welcomes you with open arms and loves endlessly... that is Kahama. I cannot think of a better place to focus our humanitarian efforts. The impact of giving back to children that enriches the lives of the people they interact with is life-changing. I believe ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
3 weeks building the community center, 1 week building wells in the village
Cost: $4999
Replace a week of volunteering for a safari excursion in the Serengeti. $1100
Add one month in Zanzibar $7999 total.
This trip is offered all three months of the summer.
Community Center
Summer 2023 we spent a lot of time in Kahama city and have completely fallen in love with the kids in the community. It became apparent that the amazing kids could benefit from a community center; a place where kids can learn and play and be given opportunities to reach their full potential. Kids are not afforded many options in Kahama -this community center will offer free activities such as English classes, art, photography, science, cooking, and sports to name a few. Summer 2024 students will spend 2 weeks helping to lay the foundation and walls of this amazing place.
Well Building
Many regions in Tanzania are without running water. Women wake early each morning, walk great distances with buckets on their heads to collect water for cooking and bathing. We will be working with the women and services division of Kahama to build wells in the villages that lie in the outskirts of the city of Kahama. Each student will have assistance building a well and will have the honor of having a plaque in their name put on the well as recognition of the love and service they provide during the trip.
Safari Excursion
The Serengeti is possibly one of the most famous national parks on earth. Students will enjoy their last week of the trip on this amazing adventure as they explore the national park going on game drives, watching the Big 5 and other incredible creatures in their natural habitat. A visit to the Ngororo crater is a breathtaking highlight. The trip will be complete with day spent with the hunter-gather Hadzabe Tribe.
